Ansel Adams
By Steven Dale
Ansel Adams Photos Mystery Ansel Adams is possibly the most famous dead American photographer and certainly the world's most famous landscape photographer. He is certainly one of my favourites and we have a large print of The Tetons and Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming hanging on our wall. I also have a couple of books of his images. So, the news that a man in Fresno had bought (for $45) a couple of boxes of glass negatives that are now being valued at around $200 million certainly caught my attention! Now I wish the fortunate chap all the very best and hope he certainly makes a nice return on his find. I also hope he shares his good fortune with whoever he bargained with to knock the price down from $70. However, what interests me most about this story is that if these are indeed images created by the master himself then they represent some of his earliest works. Better still, they are ones that were thought lost forever when a fire destroyed many of his negatives from around the 1920's. If they indeed are genuine Ansel Adams images then they will give an amazing insight into the development of his work into what we know best today. On the other hand, there are counter-claims that an elaborate hoax is being played upon us all and that they are the work of less famous photographers. I guess it will be a while before we know one way or another and may indeed never know with 100% certainty. My own view is that with all the modern hi-tech forensics we have today I am sure we will know with 99% certainty at some stage, once the lawyers have had their say.
A keen photographer who has worked as a freelance photographer in the past for "Professional Nurse" journal and other clients. Many years experience of using cameras (both film and digital) in several formats, of developing my own negatives and printing my own images. Works exclusively with digital and computer graphics software.
