Films that have inspired me
By Steven Dale
My Top Ten Most Inspiring Films Film is a very powerful medium and it has the ability to change lives, opinions and even bring about changes in government policies. Here is my Top Ten Most Inspiring Films: 1. A World Apart (1988) | Director: Chris Menges 2. Au revoir les enfants (1987) | Director: Louis Malle 3. Its a Wonderful Life (1946) | Director: Frank Capra 4. Sound of Music (1965) | Director: Robert Wise 5. Born on the Fourth of July (1989) | Director: Oliver Stone 6. The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) | Director: Philip Kaufman 7. My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown (18989) | Director: Jim Sheridan 8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) | Director: Michael Gondry 9. Exodus (1960) | Director: Otto Preminger 10. Cathy Come Home (1966) | Director: Ken Loach These are not in any particular order of importance and they are not the only ones that have inspired me, but they are probably the most significant ones. Here are the reasons why they inspire me: 1. A World Apart - an insight to apartheid (another would be Cry Freedom). 2. Au revoir les enfants - a true tale of Jewish boys hidden in a Catholic school run by monks in France who are betrayed to the Gestapo. 3. Its a Wonderful Life - James Stewart discover that every life is of worth. 4. Sound of Music - the wartime angle is important but the sheer joy and zest for life is what inspires! 5. Born on the Fourth of July - probably Tom Cruise's best role ever, yes even better than his portrayal of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg! 6. The Unbearable Lightness of Being - a Cold War tale that manages to convince that love overcomes all the odds. 7. My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown - Daniel Day Lewis inspires us to count our blessings and strive more earnestly to be a better person in this true story of Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy. He learned to paint and write with his only controllable limb - his left foot. 8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - an inspiring tale of love not giving up. 9. Exodus - epic tale about the founding of the State of Israel. Whatever your take on the issues you can't fail to be moved by this compelling telling of the drama. 10. Cathy Come Home - a film that brought bout the founding of SHELTER, the UK charity dedicated to tackling homelessness in all its forms. May you be inspired to watch these films and in turn be further inspired to change the world for the better.
