Free Online Courses

Did you know that there are hundreds, if not thousands of free online courses available on a wide range of topics, including marketing, money matters, food (recipes especially), how to set up a blog, a business or how to bring up children.

How do you find these free online courses?
The best way to start finding such free online courses is to use search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. Simply type in search terms such as "free online courses" or "free courses". When I did this, Google came up with 24,300,000 links for the first search term and 15,200,000 for the second search term! Of course, not all these links will be useful but certainly the first few pages will provide worthwhile links.

Another excellent way is to do a local search on sites such as the BBC (or your own local TV networks).

The BBC, being funded via the licence payers by way of an annual fee has to provide certain free information. Part of its remit is education and as online resources are cheaper to provide than printed, there is a wealth of courses available on the BBC website. Examples include:

• Learning a foreign language
• Art and Design
• Basic Skills
• Building Skills
• Business Studies
• Cars
• Children's Learning
• Crafts
• Environmental Studies
• Food and Catering
• Gardening
• Health and Nursing
• History
• Homes
• Information Technology
• Legal and Consumer
• Maths
• Media Studies
• Music
• Performing Arts
• Personal Development
• Religious Studies
• Science
• Sports and Fitness

In the USA, there is the Public Broadcasting Service, which provides similar resources.

Other sources
Anther excellent place to find free online course online is on University websites. Many universities and colleges provide free online courses to the community or as a taster of courses you can register for. Some even provide free access to courses for people on limited incomes that otherwise you would need to pay fees for. Such opportunities are often funded by government, such its worth checking out government websites for any such opportunities. In the UK, there is Learndirect, a public funded agency and many of its course can be studied online for free.

Yet another good source of free online courses are podcasts. Check out the iTunes site for an ever-growing list of free podcasts. The future lies with podcasts I feel. Not only can you listen and watch (many have video), you can also download materials as pdf's too.

PodcastAlley.com is another place to find podcasts on many subjects.

Finally, another source of free online courses are the sites that offer access to a catalogue of online courses for a subscription. Yes you have to pay... but they also provide free 'taster' courses, usually several chapters of the whole course. This is a good way of "try before you buy" and to check if you really do want to learn that subject you keep wondering about. Search for "online training" in any search engine.

With the trend for almost everything it seems to go online, the number of free online courses can only grow with time. My current recommendation is the HP site, where you can find several courses on a variety of topics, some in Spanish! Check out the link below.
