Gardens and gardening for the over-50's
By Steven Dale
When, like me, you are in your 50's or older, gardening can become something of a chore. Especially for those of us with back problems. We may dream of our perfect garden, full of fruit trees, a vegetable patch, herbs, exotic flowers and beautiful trees that provide colours and fragrances throughout the year to delight our senses and furnish our table with the literal fruits of our labour. However, the reality is often very different when we become middle-aged and more so when we struggle with our physical limitations. So, what can we do about it? Well, there are several options: • Hire a gardener (not an option if you are cash-poor) • Ask for help - family, friends and neighbours may be willing help for a share in the fruit of their labours • Visit gardens - lots of larger gardens are open to the public for part of the year • Lobby your local authority to maintain or enhance public spaces with gardens • Get involved at your local school - encourage and support them in using gardens as an educational tool • Join a local environmental group - a good way of enjoying the results of what others have done for the environment • Try growing stuff in pots or grow bags and if need be, place them higher up on walls, tables etc - that way you don't need to bend. A great way to grow strawberries and herbs! These are just some of the ways that those of us who aren't able, for whatever reasons, to maintain a garden ourselves, to enjoy the beauty of creation and delight in the wonders of nature, whatever the season. So, if, like me, you are over 50 and unable to actively enjoy digging, planting and harvesting a garden, don't give up. There are other options.
