Germs Favourite Travel Modes!
By Steven Dale
Germs love to travel and they get everywhere! Germs are very adept at travelling and have favourite destinations: • Knives • Cooked food • Hands • Chopping Boards • Fridges • Utensils KnivesGerms love knives! From here they can travel to most other places, especially foods such as salads, fruit and meats. Cooked FoodMixing raw and cooked food is an open invitation to germs to go on their travels! Typical scenario is when raw, uncooked chicken is stored above cooked food, either in the fridge or on the grill. HandsHand-washing before and after close contact with food products is the single most important measure for controlling and preventing the spread of infection. Chopping BoardsGerms love to use chopping boards as a stop-over before moving on to their next destination. Wooden boards especially are excellent accommodation until the next food item comes along. Make sure you properly clean and dry boards and keep two, one for raw and uncooked meats, the other for foods such as fruit and vegetables. Keep another one just for cutting bread. FridgesFridges are like hotels for germs! If foods, especially raw and uncooked meats, are allowed to drip onto other foods, then the risk of cross-infection is high. Keep all products in separate containers and don't store raw and uncooked foods above cooked food. UtensilsGerms love a party or a BBQ! Tongs provide a short stop-over before they hop onto food. Any utensil though can harbour germs, so make sure they are cleaned between use and that you use separate ones for handling raw foods (including salads) and cooked foods. TipsGerms from raw chicken can cause fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Put a stop to these germs travel plans and wash anything that has been in contact with raw chicken. Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after touching food. Cooking raw chicken thoroughly is more important and effective than washing it. If you do wash raw chicken be careful as you can splash germs onto the working surface, the sink, chopping boards and anything else that is nearby. Don't place raw chicken next to other meats on a BBQ or grill. Always store raw chicken at the bottom of the fridge so it can't drip onto other foods.
