Monitoring your website for free
By Steven Dale
Why monitor your website's traffic? Lots of people have websites, probably tens of millions of us. We do so for lots of reasons, one of which may be to make money. However, even if your primary motive for having a website is to share your knowledge, maybe about a hobby, and not about making money, sooner or later you will want to know who's visiting your site. You may just want to know that you are getting visitors... after all nobody wants to go to the effort of creating a website, even a free one, if no-one else is going to see it. How to monitor your site for free: So, what information do you want to know and how do you get to know that information? Well, you need some way of monitoring the traffic your site receives, even if its just the number of visitors. You can do this in one of two ways: 1. Use software provided by your hosting company if you have your own domain (e.g. www.mydomain.com). This solution typically involves logging into your control panel (cpanel) and looking at your traffic stats analyzed by whatever software your hosting provider uses. You sometimes also have the option of downloading the raw stats to load into software on your computer, which can be free. 2. You can install a small piece of html or javascript somewhere on one of your pages, usually your homepage (e.g. www.yourdomain.com/index.html). This usually installs either a counter or a graphic that shows some statistics on your site's visitors. it may also, through a link, take you to another web page to give more detailed information. This is the option I prefer. I recommend Sitemeter as they give very detailed stats for free and the graphic is quite small and doesn't look out of place. They are also used by large companies so you can trust them.

Yes Steven, web stats are the ace up the sleeve for savvy webmasters, especially with the info of what search terms were used to find your site. That can be used to adapt your text very effectively to accommodate the needs of web surfers, which = more traffic.
