Who has inspired me the most
By Steven Dale
Inspirational People Everyone needs to be inspired and having others inspire you can only have positive effects. Its one of life's win win things. By acting in ways that inspire others we ourselves benefit, as we are giving rather than receiving. Also, those we inspire benefit and hopefully go on to inspire others in turn. It can only be good thing for society as a whole when we are inspired by others and are ourselves an inspiration to ohers. So who has inspired me? Well, as a young person there were many people who inspired me. I didn't have a particularly easy childhood, as I grew up in relative poverty and my parents divorced when I was aged 8, after a traumatic marriage. Still, I managed to developed a fairly positive, life is a "glass half full" attitude, due in the main to positive people who inspired me. Some of them were family members, who managed to be positive in the face of adversities, such as health problems, bereavement and life's disappointments. Others were teachers, always an important source of inspiration. My teachers managed to inspire me to believe in myself and that I could achieve as long as I worked hard to maximise my God-given abilities and life's opportunities. I remember one teacher in particular who inspired me, Mr Mann, who was our Technical Drawing tutor. He was a tough disciplinarian, but always fair and had a sense of humour too. He always had time if you were struggling with your work or grasping a concept. He never raised his voice and managed to remain calm whatever the situation. He was one of the few teachers I ever went back to visit long after I left school. Another teacher who inspired me was my English teacher, who invested time encouraging me to write. She would read my short stories and give me feedback that helped me develop my creative ideas. She introduced me to Shakespeare, the Black Panthers, Rev. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement too. After I left school I have been inspired by various people over the years, many of whom I came to know through my work as a nurse. Many who had every reason to complain instead showed great fortitude and humour in the face of serious illness, including those who finally lost their personal battle with their illness. Parents who lost children were amongst the most inspiring but sometimes it was individuals who showed joy at life's blessings such as the birth of a child. When my wife was in hospital with complications before the birth of our son, we became friends with an Ethiopian couple who were having similar problems and they were an inspiration with their constant joy and faith, whatever the situation. We have remained friends ever since and though they have experienced many trials in life since, they remain as positive and joyful as ever, no doubt due, in large part, to their faith. These are all people I have met, but many who I have never met have also been an inspiration. Who can fail to be inspired by Rev. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela? The list is too long to write out in full but here are some others who have inspired me in a particular area or in general: . Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan with their music and lyrics • Queen Elizabeth II with her devotion to duty, ability to relate to anyone and everyone and her fortitude when life deals her a poor hand • Ansel Adams - photographer • Those who forgive the murderers of their loved ones when all the world is full of hate and bitterness • Anyone who has overcome disability to live life to the full, often much more than me, to my shame. Along with these are many poets, filmmakers, writers and philanthropists. The truth is, wherever one looks, its impossible not to find inspiration. Look around yourself with an open mind and a humble heart and I guarantee you WILL find inspiration. Once you do, as well as giving thanks for the source of that inspiration, be sure to act on it and do something that will in turn inspire others. The wonderful thing is that one single act that inspires can lead to a multitude of acts that themselves inspire others. |
